    Album Description
Swiss-French flautist Emmanuel Pahud, named "one of the finds of the decade" by Gramophone Magazine, is one of today's most exciting and adventurous musicians. Appointed Principal Flute for the Berliner Philharmoniker aged just 22, his solo albums have sold over 400,000 copies worldwide, including a Mozart Concertos disc that has sold over 70,000 units.

Pahud now explores the genius of Johann Sebastian Bach in a 2-CD release featuring all of Bach's flute sonatas. These works were written between about 1720 and 1741 at a time when the recorder was being superseded by the transverse flute, and are a celebration by Bach of the technical and expressive qualities and tonal colors this new instrument offered him.

    Did I miss something?3
I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I missed something about the intent behind this project, musically or artistically. Absent is Pahud's famously gorgeous tone, his impeccable attention to detail, his carefully considered phrasing, and, basically, his individuality.

These recordings are technically quite flawless, but to my ear they somehow lack the extra "oomph" that his Telemann recordings had. It sounds like he just pulled them off the shelf and started playing them- very well of course, but without the extra stylistic or musical considerations that take a very good performance to an outstanding, *individualized* final product.

That being said, overall the performance is extremely tasteful and high quality, and it's wonderful to have such a good compilation of the Bach Sonatas, with an ensemble on original instruments. However...

I've been waiting for these recordings for a long time, and am really disheartened that they're not what I thought they'd be. His other recordings, especially the Telemann and Mozart, have been a huge source of inspiration and motivation for me in my own playing, so I can't help but feel a little let down that these aren't up to that level.

Maybe I'll give them another listen and try to figure out what I'm missing...

    I've waited my whole life5
I am a flutist and flute teacher who is passionate about the Bach Sonatas. Although only a beginner traverso player, I have a strong sense of the Baroque style and performance practice. I honestly have waited my whole life for this recording. Emmanuel Pahud is a dream come true in my musical world. He plays these sonatas in a passionate yet stylistically correct manner.

    Greatest living flutist5
This recording is absolutely phenomenal. Pahud's playing is beautiful, effortless and musical - just flawless. What I love about this recording in particular is that he plays in a true baroque style with very light vibrato, if any. He is not overly romantic yet is so wonderfully musical. His gorgeous "open string" sounding long notes ring with the most beautiful sound. He ornaments very tastefully in a few spots - never over-done. I have been waiting for a recording of the Bach Sonatas like this for years. Thank you Emmanuel. I can't stop listening to this CD. I am so inspired by it! Please come to Southern California to perform sometime.
