    Excellent performances, recording-remastering mediocre...4
These recordings date from 1962 through 1964. The state-of-the art for analog was fully developed by then (see the fine RCA Living Stereo releases from the 1950's!), so my best guess as to the "metallic" sound of the piano is that it stems from a bad remaster/transfer job in 1991-2 and/or the use of 2nd or later generation tapes, or a bad recording to begin with... Truth be told, I have the original LPs that came as a boxed set containing all of LvB's piano music (incl. the concertos, etc.) and I am leaning toward the last possibility being the case here... the performances trump the sonics, and I'd not hesitate to recommend these versions.

    AMONG THE BEST!5
One man's viewpoint: Brendel again shows his wonderful, steady sense of rhythm. The miracle is that he can keep it rock-steady or slow it a bit for dramatic effect - only if he wants to. He has control and a clarity of vision/purpose with each piece. So of course he transmits this to us. I also notice the lightness of touch he has. And his limber agility (hard-won, no doubt).
I suggest picking up on all four of Mr. Brendel's Vox recordings of the LVB sonatas. Absolutely wonderful stuff. Also consider his fine, fine Diabelli Variations on Vox. Also I suggest checking out John O'Conor's set. Fantastic! Also Claude Frank has a highly praised set; I may buy this one next (a real bargain).
There are many fine players, so enjoy the search through these piano pieces of such incredible character, nobility, beauty, and boldness. They help develop a love of sound and the fine arts.

Brendel plays Bethoven in his own way5
He may not have a lyricism of Gilels or force and precision of Sokolov, but along these greatest I love the way he plays No.10 G Major and NO. 15 D Major "Pastoral" and others from this album

    José M. Medina & S.Tucker5
One or the best interpritations of the Vals Melodicos we have heard. On José's part,as an explorer performer, he found the different use of various guitars an added dimension to this selection of familar pieces.A deeply satisfing listening experience which we use frequently. Thank you Xuefei Yang.

    Xue Fei Yang - 40 Degrees North2
I think Xue Fei Yang is a great guitarist....I have all 3 of her CDs. However, the music in this CD is kind of boring to me personally. Same goes for the Four Seasons. My two children who are learning to play classical guitar share the same sentiments. Kids can be brutally honest.

Listen to the music samples before you buy otherwise you'll regret it if the genre is not for you. It's for die hard classical guitarists!!

I like her Romance De Amor CD though. A number of lovely pieces there and played with real passion. Wish she would play more non classical pieces or have a good mix in her other CDs.

    Good but not great2
This version is OK, but it doesn't have the energy and dynamics that my old version from the 80th has.

    What a pleasant surprise!5
I thought that this would be one of those neither fish nor fowl CDs but when I put it on I was pleasantly surprised. Handel;'s music translates well into the Gospel/Funk/Soul/Rock versions sung by Jeffrey Osborn, Glady Knight (snas Pips), Chaja Khan and Roger Daltry. The Gospel ensemble is exciting and on the money whil eht eIrish Philharmonic Chorus sings the choral parts both legit and funky perfectly.

The orchestr ais able to keep up with the changes and transitions as well.

I heartily recommend this to anyone who wants an exciting and herat lifting reading and retelling of the birth and resurrection on the MESSIAH!

    Amazon.com essential recording
Chopin's Impromptus have something of a reputation as "salon music," largely because the form itself seems to imply something improvised, transient, or insignificant. But when you play them like the greatest music in the world--which is exactly what Murray Perahia does--it's hard not to believe that the music actually is the greatest in the world, or in any event so fine as to make no difference. If other pianists treat them like pieces of fluff, that's their problem. The other two pieces are singletons, Chopin's sole effort in each genre. A "Berceuse" is simply a lullaby, and Chopin's is appropriately tranquil, while Barcarolle is a boat song, and this particular example is one of the composer's very finest works. --David Hurwitz

    Customer Reviews

Murray Perahia is the best for Chopin!5
Very enjoy his performance for Chopin pieces.

I purchase many pianoists' CD for Chopin. But I have to say this one is the best among various all Chopin's piano CDs. You must buy it if you really love Chopin.

    Chopin of rare distinction5
To listen to this CD is to experience rare greatness in Chopin playing. Perahia distills through his crystalline purity of tone all the necessary nobility and virility. His traversal of the Impromptus is astonishingly straightfoward and unaffected. Nowhere is a phrase pulled out of shape. His Berceuse is a miracle of limpid phrasing and crystalline tone conjuring up images of a baby being lulled to sleep by the sound of a musicbox. Barcarolle, too, offers beautifully sculpted playing, Italianate in its poetry and aristocratically poised in phrasing. Lipatti and Rubinstein, I'm afraid, are second-bested by Perahia in this piece. In the Fantasie in f minor, Perahia's virtuosity is always at the service of the composer. Whatever other recordings of this repertoire you may own, this is an essential addition. Moreover, it is superbly recorded.

The Best "Church Windows" Out There4
This was my first exposure to the four-movement tone poem "Church Windows," and López-Cobos's interpretation is still at the top, from the recordings I've heard. He's the only one who understands the importance and raw, naked power of the French Horn ostinato figure at the end. No other recording of this work gets it right. His lightning tempos in "Roman Festivals" should also not be missed. The ending is a whirlwind. I prefer the version of "Brazilian Impressions" on Geoffrey Simon's CD. If you can get a download of Simon's BI, and López-Cobos's CW and RF, you'll be better off.

I just wish the level of technical recording on this CD was better. There is somewhat of a lacking in the treble, as if the sound is a bit muted. This, however, is a minor complaint, especially considering the wonderful interpretation of two out of three of the works on this recording.

    Simply Amazing5
I will admit from the outset that Respighi is one of my top five favorite composers; but he has earned that place with works of beauty, power, creativity, feel and elegance.
Ottorino Respighi was known for his unabashed love of the classical and romance periods of classical music and these 3 compositions are unmistakably nostalgiac of those periods.
Church Windows, was composed as a tribute to the style of classical church works and thus named after stained glass windows depicting scenes from the Bible; oddly, and thus somewhat confusing to this fan of Respighi, these tone poems were written BEFORE the names were applied, which is in stark contrast to Respighi's habit of naming tone poems after that which inspired him (Roman Festivals and Brazilian Impressions on this disk being 2 examples; Fountains and Pines, the other 2 pieces from the Rome trio, are other examples). Regardless of the inspiration behind this work, all 4 pieces from Windows are marvelous, sometimes eerie, but always beautiful.
Brazilian Impressions was composed after Respighi and his wife made a trip to Rio to hear performances of his works and he found the musical styling of Latin America so intriguing that, almost as soon as he returned home, he composed these three poems as his expression of love for, and inspired by, the musical mode of the Brazilian music.
Roman Festivals, the most well known of these three compositons, completed Respighi's Rome Trilogy. Fountains of Rome (1916) and Pines of Rome (1923) preceded Festivals (1928), and the three are now what's most closely associated with Respighi. All 3 are superb and I highly recommend purchasing the other 2 to complete the trio; perhaps Respighi: Pines of Rome; Fountains of Rome; Metamorphoseon Modi XII which is a wonderful recording of the first two tone poems and also includes the Metamorphoseon Modi which are excellent, even if rarely known, as well. But I digress.
Roman Festivals seemed to be the feather in Respighi's cap; a wonderful composition that is pure chaos, controlled and perfect. I often hear Respighi described as bombastic, which may be somewhat accurate but leaves much about the music to explain. To put it simply, Respighi's work was that of a genius mad-man; the fourth movement from Festivals is sheer insanity on percussion and horns and is, in my ever so humble opinion, perhaps one of the most creative sounds in modern classical composition; certainly so, as far as finales are concerned.
The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jesus Lopez-Cobos, have played these 3 pieces marvelously and the recording and mixing is near perfect. This is a beautiful recording.
Respighi was a wonder and his entire life's work should be celebrated.

Unimpressive Works by a Great Composer2
I am a fan of many of Respighi's works, but I was not impressed by Brazilian Impressions or Church Windows. Both of the works struck me as unusually sluggish, with a lack of focus.

The current Schwann catalog lists nine versions of Górecki's phenomenally popular Symphony 3 (Sorrowful Songs) composed in 1976. During his early career, Górecki embraced serialism and concentrated on instrumental sonorities in the vein of Messiaen. But in Symphony 3, his atonality disappears into a strategy of gently mounting thematic pitches, taking the strings through all possible registers. All three movements are marked lento, rare for any symphony. The Elektra Nonesuch recording has tended to be the bestseller, but give this Naxos release a try--it's just as good. The sound is excellent and the performances are above reproach. --Paul Cook

    Beautiful music!5
"Symphony of Sorrowful Songs" is one of the most beautiful music pieces ever composed! If you can listen carefully, and let yourself be swept up by the piece, you will be very effected! While listening to the music, my heart started racing at one point, and I felt flushed from the reaction to the music! Beautiful!

    Among the greatest Classical compositions5
It is rare when a composition has consistent appeal from beginning to end and one with such quality makes Gorecki's Symphony #3 a very rare find.
The beginning is unusually understated. For those with home theaters or a bass speaker, it will heighten the beauty of the string instruments. At a moderate volume, the introduction can vibrate the house. The first movement has a slow crescendo that cumulates to a very profound point. The second and third movements have such emotional beauty that I can justifiably claim that the vocal soloist is seraphic and sublime and it is as close to angelic singing that mortals can achieve. As one who does not care for opera, I want to stress that this music is not like opera in any way . For those who enjoy Beethoven's 9th, Ode to Joy, or In Trutina from Carmina Burana, this symphony can't disappoint.

    Dark poetry; tragic exuberance!5
Poland has been always a land of courageous and untamed spirit; stubborn to any single bit of domination. This territory has given sublime artists. Gorecki is one of the last exponents; even he was born just in the final of the WW2.

His famous Third Symphony is widely known all around the world and constituted definitively a mass phenomena, its consecration and full acceptation. Gorecki employed an admirable sense of the musical texture inviting us to imagine an enormous birch's forest with astonishing austerity of means economy in what orchestration concerns. This music suggests me the kaleidoscopic awakening of slept centuries under the history 's carpet. Ancestral sorrows, delirious visions with that contemplative gaze in the mirror 's memory. In this Christmas, it is a magnificent chance to listen it once more.

This is possibly the most idiomatic version recorded until this date. Wit made no concessions of any kind. The reading is marvelous and heartfelt; emotion and epic have been magnificently blended and besides, supported by an inspired ensemble. Zofia Kilanowicz is simply bewitching as Soprano. The Second Movement is perfect.

    Go for this spelling recording.

    Album Description
Grammy Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell, who has enchanted audiences for two decades with his breathtaking playing and tone of rare opulence, has recorded Antonio Vivaldi's concertos The Four Seasons. Widely considered as one of the premiere violinists of his generation, Bell is joined on this studio release by the celebrated musicians of the Academy of St.Martin in the Fields, who toured the work with him prior to the recording sessions. This recording of The Four Seasons is coupled with another masterpiece of Baroque virtuosity, Giuseppe Tartini's The Devil's Trill. The liner notes by Linda Kobler explain the curious genesis of Tartini's piece and the indisputable place of Vivaldi's concertos in the history of sonata composition.

    Customer Reviews

    Stunning!!!5
Ok, but there about probably about a billion recordings of Vivaldi's four seaons, and I know this is probably the last CD you would want to buy, but Joshua Bell is such a brilliant violist, its worth it to buy this CD, he really puts a new spin onto Vivaldi's best known concerti.

    A curiosity2
For those that love Joshua Bell, this album will be a must-have. Slick packaging, a small poster of the player himself on one side and a calendar on the other, four cards with pictures on one side and seasonal poems on the other... For those that love Vivaldi, not so much. Bell's interpretation (in spite of the adulation in the liner notes) sounds less like an "individual interpretation" and more like the Suzuki method of approaching The Four Seasons. This particular grouping of Vivaldi's work is something that really need not be done again, and it's to Bell's discredit that he did it. It's also to his discredit that he did it the way it was done. Credit, however, where credit is due: Bell interpreted the Tartini very well, and seemed to show the emotion lacking in the Vivaldi, and for that reason alone the album is not a waste. Also, The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields did a wonderful job, given what they had to work with. If you must listen to the album for the Four Seasons, try to ignore the soloist and focus on the group. Sadly, this time around, it's not too difficult.

    Joshua Bell doesn't dissapoint!5
I am a huge fan of Joshua Bell and his interpretation of the Four Seasons is the best i've heard. If you are a huge fan of Vivaldis four seasons then do not think twice about buying this CD. Its beyond amazing and I absolutely love it!!

Typical clarity and quality for Boston Baroque4
The last two or three seasons, I've been sampling various recordings of Messiah, and ordered this copy last December. Though it took me almost a year to listen to this recording, it was, for the most part, well worth the wait. As on all the Boston Baroque recordings I've heard, this CD features crystal clear articulation from the performing forces. The soloists are very capable, and for this listener, it was a joy to hear the soloists singing on their voices, rather than being handicapped through the guise of no vibrato in early music. My only caution is that the tempi in almost all cases tend to be on the fast side, almost rushed sometimes. It is fortunate that the performers are well up to the task, as their brisk, sprite articulation is a nice alternative to other recordings out there. While, as a performer, I don't necessarily agree with some of these choices, it is nice to have something different than current recordings available. Well worth it

    Careful with the MP3 !5
I haven't heard this performance. I've just ordered it because of the positive ratings and recommendations it's gotten. BUT... I wanted to grab a little preview from the MP3 samples, and what do I find but another amazon snafu. The MP3 takes you directly to the CD of the Robert Shaw Chorale, hardly likely to be of comparable merit.

    Great, great, great!5
I recommend this for you or for a present for someone or for presents for many people. It is beautiful. Wonderful to play now, especially during Christmas season, but can listen to whenever. The booklet containing all the words is also wonderful- it contains the words in many languages. Uplifting- brings joy to me on my way to work.

Leif Ove Andsnes, obviously one of the superior artists on the current piano scene, deserves credit for paying attention to Haydn. Every one of these sonatas is a masterpiece, and every one is played with Andsnes's typical intelligence and scrupulous detail. You could virtually take dictation from these performances, except for some missing repeats. But it's hard to feel that Andsnes identifies as strongly with this music as he does with Brahms. As fine as this playing is, it has an aura of objectivity that keeps the results from being completely satisfying. Although this disc does not lessen my admiration for the pianist, you could spend the same money for three of Jandó's Naxos CDs of Haydn and have a lot more music, played as well, if not better. --Leslie Gerber

    Customer Reviews

    Super5
Great cd worth the price clear and crisp performances make Haydn come to life!

    everything Andsnes touches is gold5
your eyes can be opened to an artist's true worth just by hearing one thing they do that bowls you over. Andsnes is one of those rare pianists who has a formidable technique (and a fabulous sense of rhythm) without overwhelming the piano and playing harshly or smashing the keys down. He has a mixture of wonderful technique and pin-point finger velocity. Just listen to the first three tracks on Amazon (which he plays at a spanking presto) he lifts that piece of Haydn out of all time.

Andsnes is not an eccentric pianist, he's wonderfully musical and rewarding. Everything else I have by Andsnes is great especially the Bartok violin and piano sonatas and the janacek piano album on Virgin.

As for Haydn, he's an underrated genius always unfairly overshadowed by Mozart (no slouch he) but Hadyn can hold his own with his warm, human and unbelievably inventive music in every genre.

Relax and enjoy, an album to cherish

Andsnes and Haydn: A perfect match5
Leif Ove Andsnes, one of the best pianists in the world for the time being, has also become one of the best Haydn interpretors. This album is excellent, especially Piano Sonata No. 32 in C sharp minor.

Just relax and enjoy the fantastic 1-hour journey with Leif Ove Andsnes as your guide. He plays with such an ease, and shows yet again that Andsnes and Haydn is a perfect match.

Leonard Bernstein - Young People's Concerts / New York Philharmonic

Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts with the New York Philharmonic stand among his greatest achievements. These televised programs introduced an entire generation to the joys of classical music. Bernstein conducted his first Young People's Concert on January 18, 1958, just two weeks after becoming Music Director of the New York Philharmonic. Such programs were already a Philharmonic tradition when Bernstein arrived, but he made them a centerpiece of his work, part of what he described as his "educational mission." Looking back on the concerts years later, he referred to them as being "among my favorite, most highly prized activities of my life." When he took a sabbatical season from the orchestra in 1964-65, he still came back to lead the Young People's Concerts. He continued to lead these programs until 1972, even though he had stepped down as director of the Philharmonic in 1969. Bernstein led a total of fifty-three Young People's Concerts during those fourteen years, and covered a broad range of subjects. The works of the great composers were explored, including tributes to modern masters such as Dmitri Shostakovich, Paul Hindemith, Gustav Holst, Aaron Copland and Charles Ives. Bernstein discussed "Jazz in the Concert Hall," "Folk Music in the Concert Hall," and "The Latin-American Spirit." He explained the intricacies of Music Theory in programs such as "Musical Atoms: A Study of Intervals" and "What is a Mode?" He broached complex aesthetic issues such as "What Does Music Mean?" (his first program) with clarity and without condescension. Bernstein also used the Young People's Concerts to introduce young performers to the musical world. The sixteen year-old pianist André Watts made his debut in the concert of January 15, 1963. Originally broadcast on Saturday mornings, the programs were considered so important that for three glorious years CBS presented them at 7:30 p.m. (prime time for television viewing). Eventually the programs were moved to Sunday afternoons. The concerts were translated into other languages and syndicated to forty countries.

Leonard Bernstein earned glory as a composer, conductor, and pianist (classical and jazz), but nothing gave him more pleasure than the joy of teaching. He presented the unique blend of spoken words and music known as the "Young People's Concerts" throughout his tenure as music director of the New York Philharmonic and for several years after. His enjoyment, and his audience's, can be seen vividly captured by the video cameras. He is an intensely interactive teacher, getting his audience to sing, springing a quiz full of trick questions, and singing a Beatles song to demonstrate a point.

Bernstein is completely at ease talking to his audience. He can take the most abstruse subject - the meaning and function of intervals, tonality and atonality, the links between Gustav Mahler's troubled life and his music - and present them to a young audience with clarity, without condescension, and with a clear sense of the material's value. His subject-matter is enormously varied. For Igor Stravinsky's 80th birthday, he simply tells his audience the story of Petrouchka while conducting a dazzling performance of the colorful ballet. For a program on "Folk Music in the Concert Hall," he plays some of Canteloube's folk song arrangements and the boisterous finale of Ives's Symphony No. 2, full of borrowed pop and folk melodies. The influence of folk music is shown in folk song imitations by Mozart and Carlos Chavez.

The sound and images, taped over a 15-year span when the art of recording was rapidly advancing, are varied in quality; the series begins in black-and-white and ends in vivid color. Not all of the programs are equally compelling, but all are worth close and repeated attention. --Joe McLellan

    Great5
This is an outstanding series which all parents should share with their children. Our society (children and adults) need music. Maestro Bernstein is a genius. How could parents NOT expose their kids and themselves to this series!

A must toward getting musical culture in every home5
Bernstein is truly a genius. This collection shows in a detailled and very didactic manner the best way to aproach the learning and enjoying of classic music.
In specially attonishing and breathtaking "The sound pf an Orchestra" "The Sonata form" "What is a Concert" and thos parts where Bernstain performs his pianistic parts showing himself as a virtuoso.
I allready conveyed my collection to those physicians in my hospital to whom I am conducting in the world of classic music.
But most important, I gather my grand sons to initiate them in Music with this great master, Leonard Bernstein and his Young People's Concerts.

    Excelent Bernstein5
This is the best colection of Bernstein, as an outstanding Professor. 13 years of Music Academy at the very top. Yet, easy to understand and funny. Don't miss this set. It is a must for music lovers.
