Relaxing doesn't give these CDs justice!5
These CDs are truely incredible. I bought these because I'm always really stressed, and I will be starting college soon. Plus, I love guitar music, and this has a Spanish edge, which I love. This collection of amazing songs are so soothing, I could sleep to the music. The guitar is so well played, and the songs are never boring. I truly love this!

    Choose Something Like a Star5
Great inspiring music. Would recommmend it to those who do not identify much with Robert Frost and his poetry.

    Stellar Recording!5
This CD is something I have been looking for. I heard some selections and just had to have it! Since I am a fan of Robert Frost, The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Randall Thompson, listening to it was a profound experience! In short, I LOVED IT!

This will be "The Recording" of Frostiana for many years4
I'm a recently born again fan of the MTC, so I had to pick this one up when it came out. I'm familiar with many of the pieces on the CD, so I was rather surprised with the orchestral arrangements that were included. (Frostiana was originally written for piano!) My surprise quickly turned into a wonderful listening experience as Craig Jessop sensitively led the choir through these beautiful standards of choral literature.

There were several places when the sheer size of the choir got in the way of me understanding the text, and there were balance issues with the orchestra and men/women in a few places. I imagine it's to be expected with a group this size, but it was distracting at times.

However, I was delighted to hear some pieces on this CD that I've never heard before. Craig Jessop and the MTC provide us with a wonderful 'greatest hits' of Randall Thompson with this recording. Bravo to the MTC for having the guts to take on such well-loved music. It's sad to me how little it is performed these days. I hope this CD brings all of these works back into high school and college performances.

I suppose if I had to choose a single recording coupling both of Chopin's concertos, it would be this one. Perahia is a sensitive, extremely persuasive artist who understands his own particular gifts better than anyone. He's not a muscle-bound virtuoso by any means--neither was Chopin, for that matter. All of Perahia's interpretations are finely graded, carefully prepared, and sensitive to the music's every nuance, but they never sound stiff or studied. In fact, his natural eloquence and grace at the keyboard makes him an ideal Chopin pianist, though he has been very selective in the music that he has actually recorded. Here then is a superb example of artist and composer in perfect harmony with one another. --David Hurwitz

    Old Muse4
The piano is excellent, wonderful touch and flow. The orchestra sounds as if it is coming from another source without the same audio quality.

    BORRING3
Frankly Kissin's recording from when he was a child is more pleasing to listen to for me. Granted I believe that the F-Minor is better performed here than the E-Minor however I wouldn't tell anyone to buy this recording - the stars are great but, the recordings overall subpar - esspecially Concerto No. 1.

decent performance of the Chopin Concerti4
I found this reading of the two Concerti very facile and nimble. I suppose this is appropriate for Chopin, but even still, some of the luxuriant, sensuous qualities could have been more emphasized.

Perahia's technique is indeed fluent, but perhaps a little too much so. For example, the development sections in the first movements of both Concerti are not dramatic enough.

I agree that Mehta's accompanying is weak.

    I like Ligeti5
I like the inventiveness of G. Ligeti. The Musica Ricercata Suite is a good and early example of his continuous search for new musical structures.

I'm just a music listener, with no qualification to comment the interpretation of Mr. Aimard.

    I'm satisfied.

    A nice micro-view of Ligeti's work4
In the notes that accompany this CD, Ligeti explains that his piano compositions are the way he made up for his inadequacies as a player. It's hard to argue that he didn't reach his goal. These superbly-performed pieces provide a clear view of many aspects of Ligeti's work--his humor, his lyricism, his ear, and sometimes his little obsessions.

The most obvious technical requirement of this music is touch. In some of the etudes, complex voicings are required at very low dynamic levels. In others, the ability to bring out multiple voices is paramount. Aimard is perfect. His technique is so assured that we can easily get to the music and not be sidetracked by prowess.

Those who know Ligeti's music know how protean he could be. Like a good athlete, he was willing to take on enormous risks. Sometimes the result felt intellectualized and tiresome. But more often than not, the music soared. This is certainly true of the Etudes on this disk. They are studies in the truest sense of the word--one may focus on a particular set of intervals, another on a texture, yet another on a rhythm. Each one is fascinating and the collection holds together nicely. There are even hints of Nancarrow!

Ligeti himself felt ambiguously about the "Musica Ricercata", and it isn't hard to see why. The first piece is based on only two pitches (with octaves); the second on three and so on. It sort of proves a point, but what point? By the time you get to the fourth piece, it starts to get good, but the listener has to regain some flagging energy. The third piece is actually the basis of the opening of "6 Bagatelles for Wind Quintet".

So while I have little quibbles, I still recommend this disk strongly. It's great music, beautifully played.

Very Nice Piano Studies. Not the best Ligeti4
Volume 3 of the Gyorgy Ligeti Edition on Sony has gotten a boatload of very positive reviews, above, from people who probably know a lot more about music, especially piano music, than I do, but I maintain, from my position as a rank amateur who just happens to like listening to a wide range of classical music, that this disc is neither the very best piano music nor the most interesting Ligeti.

Don't get me wrong. I think almost all of the studies on these tracks are good, maybe even almost as good as Chopin and Liszt, but I don't think so. We don't hum Ligeti etudes the way some people hum Chopin etudes or dances for piano. And, a few of the passages sound like the scene from 'Ghostbusters' where Bill Murray tickles the very high keys on Sigourny Weaver's piano as they enter her apartment to track down some particularly awesome apparitions of Zuel (sic) and Gozer (sic sic).

If you are looking to touch only the high points of Ligeti's music and don't have the compulsioin to own everything, you can pass on these and not be missing too much of the good stuff. Check out his choral and a capella works for the really hot stuff.

    Album Description
Swiss-French flautist Emmanuel Pahud, named "one of the finds of the decade" by Gramophone Magazine, is one of today's most exciting and adventurous musicians. Appointed Principal Flute for the Berliner Philharmoniker aged just 22, his solo albums have sold over 400,000 copies worldwide, including a Mozart Concertos disc that has sold over 70,000 units.

Pahud now explores the genius of Johann Sebastian Bach in a 2-CD release featuring all of Bach's flute sonatas. These works were written between about 1720 and 1741 at a time when the recorder was being superseded by the transverse flute, and are a celebration by Bach of the technical and expressive qualities and tonal colors this new instrument offered him.

    Customer Reviews

    Did I miss something?3
I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I missed something about the intent behind this project, musically or artistically. Absent is Pahud's famously gorgeous tone, his impeccable attention to detail, his carefully considered phrasing, and, basically, his individuality.

These recordings are technically quite flawless, but to my ear they somehow lack the extra "oomph" that his Telemann recordings had. It sounds like he just pulled them off the shelf and started playing them- very well of course, but without the extra stylistic or musical considerations that take a very good performance to an outstanding, *individualized* final product.

That being said, overall the performance is extremely tasteful and high quality, and it's wonderful to have such a good compilation of the Bach Sonatas, with an ensemble on original instruments. However...

I've been waiting for these recordings for a long time, and am really disheartened that they're not what I thought they'd be. His other recordings, especially the Telemann and Mozart, have been a huge source of inspiration and motivation for me in my own playing, so I can't help but feel a little let down that these aren't up to that level.

Maybe I'll give them another listen and try to figure out what I'm missing...

    I've waited my whole life5
I am a flutist and flute teacher who is passionate about the Bach Sonatas. Although only a beginner traverso player, I have a strong sense of the Baroque style and performance practice. I honestly have waited my whole life for this recording. Emmanuel Pahud is a dream come true in my musical world. He plays these sonatas in a passionate yet stylistically correct manner.

    Greatest living flutist5
This recording is absolutely phenomenal. Pahud's playing is beautiful, effortless and musical - just flawless. What I love about this recording in particular is that he plays in a true baroque style with very light vibrato, if any. He is not overly romantic yet is so wonderfully musical. His gorgeous "open string" sounding long notes ring with the most beautiful sound. He ornaments very tastefully in a few spots - never over-done. I have been waiting for a recording of the Bach Sonatas like this for years. Thank you Emmanuel. I can't stop listening to this CD. I am so inspired by it! Please come to Southern California to perform sometime.

    A Delightful Performance and Recording5
This is s delightfully delicious performance and recording of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker. Dorati's conducting reveals subtle nuances in the score. He is delicate when needed like in the Overture, Dance of the Toy Flutes and the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and bold and vivacious when needed like during the Battle scene. The recording is extremely detailed and sounds incredibly natural in SACD multi-channel sound (3 channels [Front Left-Center-Front Right] in this case). It's as if I was seated at the conductor's podium. If I had to say something negative about it, I would have to say there could be just a little more hall ambiance (reverberation). The serenade is a perfect companion piece as well.

Extremely high quality recording that is true to the composer's intent5
I have been searching for this recording for many years (since LP's went out of production and my turntable died). It is very difficult to find a complete Nutcracker that is true to Tchiakovsky's score--many other recordings add codas or other pieces from other ballets that simply do not belong. This is the "right stuff."

Concerning the SACD--my equipment is not up to the highest standards, but I know this recording inside and out and it was a real pleasure to hear the string and woodwind solos that pepper this ballet. And yes, I even was able to hear orchestral details I hadn't noticed before. This is one instance where digitizing the recording did make a notable improvement.

If you have a daughter who is interested in ballet or you are looking for a gift for someone who loves ballet, I urge you to get this disc. Many small ballet companies throughout the country put on a production of the Nutcracker in December with an edited score. Introduce your child to the beauty and drama of Tchaikovsky with this complete score--which is much more interesting and complex than people generally believe.

    very overrated and dated nutcracker2
THE LONDON SYNPHONY PLAY WELL,BUT DORATI IS TO COLD AND MECHANICAL.WHY SO MANY MUSIC CRITICS AND CLASSICAL MUSIC PEOPLE LIKE DORATI WITH TCHAIKOVSKYS MUSIC I CAN NOT FIGURE OUT.

Opening with a fleshy, resonant version of "90+," which was nominated for a 1998 Grammy award, this Carter collection is special not only for Charles Rosen's execution but also for the CD-closing conversation between performer and composer. Rosen opens the chat with a demonstration of how harmonic dissonance at once backlights and highlights Carter's famed rhythmic explorations. And Carter tells him, "This is the way we experience many things, the idea that one thing comments on another constantly." That's how Carter's music is, also constantly: frontal harmonic shocks, whether ringing tremulously or jumping in bursts of flash--as in Rosen's read of the Piano Sonata--are in dialogue with silence, rhythmic twists, and plainly beautiful constructions that sound in-process. The addition of "90+" and Bridge's customary rounded, warm sonic spaciousness make this collection superior to Rosen's Etcetera Carter collection. And for a more restrained, abstract look at "90+," try Ursula Oppens's version. --Andrew Bartlett

An Appassionata for the XXIst Century5
When Beethoven composed his "Tempest" and "Appassionata" sonatas for piano, some of his contemporaries were shocked by the extremes in tempo and dynamics. Nowadays, our ears and sensibilities have grown accustomed to Beethoven's sudden changes of tempo and mood. This is precisely how listeners in the end of the XXIst Century will probably feel about Carter's piano music. We are fortunate to have the learned and committed reading of Charles Rosen to the extraordinary piano works by Elliot Carter. The center piece of this record is Carter's Piano Sonata. Written in 1946, it is the basis for a lot of what became Carter's trademark: rapid mood changes and elaborate metric modulations. What is most impressive is that Carter achieved this effect in a piano sonata. Carter himself has said: "It was a piece that was the beginning of a new trend in my music which was I should say, the gradual elimination of a definite scheme of tonality. In the piano sonata it wavers between two keys a semi-tone apart, and you never can tell which key it's going to end up in, or where it goes." The overall effect is striking. One one hand, it appears that all the expressive possibilities of the piano are explored at once. But listening to the sonata with an open mind produces a different impression. You fell transported in the same magic world as Beethoven and Liszt. At the same time, you feel that it is possible to compose enchanting music in an entirely new way.

Excellent recording of a modern classic5
Having loved the Carter Piano Sonata since first hearing it years ago, and on learning that the really fine pianist (and equally accomplished music scholar) Charles Rosen had made a
recent recording of it, I picked it up right away. And I was
not disappointed. This is an excellent performance of a modern classic.

    lively atonal music5
This is not dry academic music but exciting music, performed by Charles Rosen with energy and surprises. It is great to hear Mr Carter's interview on the last track, talking about music.
    Here is the Man!

Still regarded by many as the greatest set of Chopin waltzes ever recorded, Dinu Lipatti's performances continue to astonish. He strokes the keyboard with such delicacy, finesse, and, where required, unobtrusive strength that the music simply seems to play itself. All of Chopin's music is, of course, exceptionally well written for the keyboard, but the sense of rhythmic lift, the inevitability--these are the hallmarks of a great artist. It's terrible to think that when he made this stunning recording, Lipatti was already in pain and dying of leukemia; there's certainly no hint of it in his playing. EMI's transfer has been accomplished with considerable skill, and we can only be grateful that Lipatti was with us long enough to finish this affecting tribute to all that's most beautiful in life. --David Hurwitz

    Customer Reviews

    Perfect Chopin waltzes5
I try not to comment when there are this many reviews unless I feel I have something to add that hasn't already been pointed out. I know that I am extremely critical of pianists, especially when it comes to Chopin. So that readers understand my personal tastes and where I set the bar, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli playing Chopin: recital, is by far my very favorite Chopin recording and I am most partial to Horowitz and Richter as pianists in general.

But a year ago, I discovered this CD after reading Amazon reviews and decided to try these waltzes since I didn't have the complete set in my classical library. From the first time I listened to Lipatti play these, I knew that there was a moment of magic captured in time when he recorded this (just as Michelangeli did with that one recording).

Perhaps one of the most difficult things to achieve, particularly with Chopin, is a balance between expression and technique. Reviewers often criticize one or the other; saying the pianist took too much liberty and over romanticized the piece or played it to technical perfection but made it too dry by leaving out expression. Having listened and even played some Chopin, I recognize how difficult it is to find this balance.

In my mind, Dinu Lipatti found the perfect balance in this recording. Every note is clear and present. He expresses enough emotion without making it schmaltzy. Hearing him play these waltzes makes me think that there was a lot more brilliance in him to contribute to piano music. It is a real loss and shame that he died so young with so few recordings.

No matter who you prefer to listen to playing Chopin, this recording is well worth owning even if it's not your favorite. Just to compare. I think I can safely say that at some points throughout these pieces while listening you will shake your head in utter dismay and say, "God! How does he do it?!"

I prefer musicality over technical brilliance3
Listening to Lipatti is like watching a car race. He plays so fast, I can't really hear the music. He is technically brilliant - no doubt about it, but I don't hear any soul when I listen to him play these waltzes. When I listen to Rubinstein, I seldom notice his technique (which is also amazing) because I am so captivated by the music.

    Breathtaking5
These extraordinary recordings by Dinu Lipatti are widely regarded as the benchmark against which all other performances of Chopin's waltzes should be measured. Frankly, Lipatti is in a category all his own and these performances render any comparisons pointless.

Lipatti had such a supreme gift as a musician that listening to him play is a unique revelation every time. Even if Chopin is not your cup of tea, hearing this is like stumbling upon a box of priceless, shimmering jewels that never seem to fade. It is not far off the mark to assert, as Karajan did, that when hearing Lipatti play the piano, you do not hear the piano but you hear something close to music in its purest form.

The Barcorolle, Nocturne and Mazurka are played just as exquisitely.

If you are only going to buy one recording of Chopin's Waltzes, this is the one to go for by a million miles.

    Pops Roundup5
I am from Wyoming and Colorado and this western roundup contains many of the old favorite western songs. Some are from western movies but most are from ageless collections of western classics.

    5 stars for the memories5
Arthur Fiedler was neither a great conductor nor a top-notch musicologist. But he had a great sense of his audience and what worked with them and he understood how his orchestra could deliver the musical goods.

I acquired this CD simply because several of the cuts were personal favorites back when I was in high school. In particular, I remember (if my memory is accurate) that WHBF-FM out of Rock Island, IL would play the "Pops Roundup" fairly regularly. And, boy, was that fun! The theme songs for a variety of Westerns that played while I was in high school got me jazzed up then--and recall neat memories even now. The collage starts with the themes from Bonanza, then Maverick, The Rebel, and Bat Masterson, and Gunsmoke (my favorite Western), and Wagon Train, and Wyatt Earp, and The Ballad of Paladin (from "Have Gun, Will Travel," another favorite), to Rawhide. Yippee! I still get some goose bumps listening to this so many years later.

Other Western standards are included. Red River Valley, Home on the Range, The Yellow Rose of Texas. Another collage--"Pops `Hoe-Down," including Arkansas Traveler, Chicken Reel, Turkey in the Straw, and so on.

The CD concludes with classics such as Streets of Laredo, Don't Fence Me In, and Deep in the Heart of Texas.

Great orchestral music? No. Lots of fun? Yes. And a bridge to those days way back when.

    Wonderful CD5
This CD was such a pleasure to listen to. Most of the songs were ones I grew up listening to, but hearing them with such wonderful orchestration was a joy.

    Sublime music, sublime performance5
I cannot fathom why this recording remains an import. It has already attained the status of a classic in the Poulenc discography and for audiophiles it is indispensable. When I read the ecstatic reviews in Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine several months ago I was a bit skeptical, despite my enormous respect for Stephen Layton and Polyphony. For the a cappella pieces (the Lenten and Christmas motets), no problem--you would expect Polyphony to nail the austere style and diaphanous textures. But what about the panoramic and quasi-operatic scope of the "Gloria"? That seemed a stretch. For this recording, however, Polyphony enlisted the resources of the Trinity College choir, the Britten Sinfonia, and the estimable soprano Susan Gritton. And the results, indeed, are breathtaking. This truly is one of the most heartstoppingly beautiful, and vivid, recordings of Poulenc, of choral music, and of Susan Gritton's ineffably suave voice. Essential.

The vastly improved sonics which the Deutsche Grammophon production team achieves with its 24/96 remastering of the guitarist's 1952-1969 mono and stereo performances for Decca allow listeners to finally experience the rich tonal palette and intimate nature of Segovia's performance art in a manner commensurate with the fidelity of the original LP releases (minus the edgy digital glare and graininess of the MCA reissues). What emerges is a portrait of the artist as a lightning rod for great composers, such as Manuel Ponce, Federico Torroba, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Isaac Albéniz, and Enrique Granados, all of whom enriched the 20th-century repertoire of solo and chamber works by custom-crafting works for this innovative guitarist (Segovia's interpretation of Joaquín Rodrigo's "Fandango" is a paradigm for his role in popularizing the modern Spanish idiom). Likewise, Segovias's work as an arranger in recasting baroque and medieval works for modern guitar, as well as his deep affection for 19th-century masters of the instrument such as Dionisio Aguado and Fernando Sor, shines forth on discs two and three. However, it is Segovia's romantic touch in transposing Bach's Partitas for Solo Violin--as on his virtuoso turns on the "Chaconne in D Minor"--that best illustrate his poetic conception of the instrument. --Chip Stern

    Great Collection5
I didn't realize what I was getting into when I tried out this collection of Segovia. I wanted to learn about the man and his music, and, WOW, what a bargain this collection turned out to be!

From Solos to Concertina's, there is so much music here that it will take me months to digest it all. I am very impressed with the quality of the mastering, Deutsch Grammophon did a wonderfull job at preserving the soundstage of the recordings, as well as the fidelity. Amazing clarity!

Components used for listening: TAD-60 Amplifier, Adcom GCD-700 CD player, Adcom GFP-710 Preamplifier, Altec 604-8G's in 620B Cabinets.

    Above All Others5
John Williams, David Russell, Christopher Parkening, Julian Bream, et. al. all owe a great deal to this now departed giant. If you own ANY classical guitar recordings, you should purchase this collection. It's not only the finest remastering available, but an equisitely fine selection of Segovia's contribution to the genre and the art.

    The Great Master, of Masters5
Andrés Segovia was the great master of classical guitar. This set show us 400 years of music taken for the guitar, he was the first in give the guitar place like a cult instrument in 20th century through his works invaluable transcriptions of several instruments (cello, lute, etc.) of composers like Bach, Dowland, Manuel M. Ponce, Fernando Sor, Tárrega, etc.

The scope from Segovia has leaved footsteps in the great world of classical music, for his research and investigations about it. In this set we can listen pieces like "six pavanas" from the ending Age Middle of Luis Milán, and begginig of Rennasaince like Dowland's songs togheter Roncali Ludovico between others on CD 3.
Also show us the great spanish composer Enrique Granados, Torroba, Sor, icons of guitar music. I Basically bought this cd for "Pavane" 1-6 and that better found it in this GREAT SET. If you're a lover of Classical Music, or classical guitar this one of the greatest set box ever made in any genre!!!.

Andrés Segovia, Marquis of Salobreia, was born near Jaen, Granada, Spain. He became a guitarist against the double opposition of his parents. First, they opposed his learning the guitar and got him cello and piano teachers instead. When he persisted in teaching himself guitar, they opposed his becoming a musician. He sought a guitar teacher at the Granada Institute of Music when he studied there, but found none, so continued learning the instrument on his own. He made his debut at the Centro Artística in Granada at the age of 15. He played so skillfully that he was urged to become a professional soloist. He played in Madrid in 1912, at the Paris Conservatory in 1915, and in Barcelona in 1916, and made a wildly successful tour of South America in 1919. He made his formal debut in Paris on April 7, 1924, in a program which included a new work written for him by Albert Roussel, named Segovia. It was the first of many works which were written for him by distinguished composers, enriching the instrument's repertory as Segovia had elevated its artistic potential. His U.S. debut was at Town Hall, New York, on January 8, 1928.

Being self-taught, his technique was unique. It was, in fact, superior to that which was being taught at the time, and extended the flexibility and expressive possibilities of the instrument. The main difference was in the method of using the right hand for strumming and picking the strings: Segovia's method paid much attention to the means of attack: whether hard parts of the fingers, fleshy parts, or the nails were used; other subtleties that affected the dynamics of the instrument; and an economy of motion that allowed longer and more sustained playing. There were classical guitarists before him, and distinguished ones even when he appeared, but it was not an instrument that was regarded as a serious vehicle for classical music. Segovia personally changed that, and not by accident. No doubt affected by his parents' attitude toward his chosen career, he had a driving desire to make it so. He wrote numerous transcriptions of older music for lute and for the Spanish vihuela. He transcribed music of Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Chopin, Handel, and others. He commissioned works by Castelnuovo-Tedesco (notably the great suite Platero and I), Falla, Turina, Tansman, Villa-Lobos, Torroba, Ponce, and Rodrigo, whose Fantasia para un gentilhombre was written for him. His reinstatement of the guitar as a solo instrument was sealed by his becoming one of the great teachers of music history. He established guitar schools or courses at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, Siena, Santiago de Compostela, and the University of California in Berkeley. His students included Alirio Diaz, Oscar Ghilia, and John Williams.

Segovia become one of the great names in classical music, whose mere name was enough to sell out houses worldwide. He received numerous awards and honors during his lifetime, including the Grand Cross of Isabela and Alfonso, the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society of London, and many honorary degrees. The house where he was born had a commemorative plaque attached to it in 1969 proclaiming him the "leading son of the city." King Juan Carlos of Spain ennobled him as the Marquis of Salobreia in 1981, and in the same year a Segovia International Guitar Competition was established in his honor. He continued to give recitals and concerts until an advanced age, and had the rare opportunity, in 1984, of playing at a gala concert honoring the 75th anniversary of professional debut.

    The Alchemist- Glenn Gould5
I bought 2 copies , one for me and one for my relatives in Alaska, who are also fans of Glenn Gould- we all loved it! Anyone who enjoys the music of Glenn Gould will want this dvd! Bill

    Magnificant4
It have a plenty range of Glould's legacy. Personally I hate the contemporary music, honestly I bought it because it have one interpretation of the magestic Partita No.6 in E minor. It have a rear romatic influence, and definitly it don't have the same perfection with the greatest baroque influence that Glenn leave us in the one recorded in 1957. Nonetheless you will see the great personality of Glenn and its lively interpretation.

    Amazing music and inspiring conversations5
This DVD is a great work of art. Here you are brought into incredible performances of Bach, Skriabin, Schoenberg, Berg, Webern and more. Even if you are not so familiar with 20th century music, you should get this and listen how also atonality can be incredibly musical and full of emotions. Very few artists can do that with this repertoire and (IMHO) they all owed it to Gould. Musical heaven at its peak, nothing else. The conversations are not too long and are some of the most inspiring music talks I have listen to in my 35 years of making music as a professional musician and a composer. Enjoy!

    Wonderful5
Wonderful classical music. The CD is very relaxing and offers a wide variety of favorite classical music. I can't wait to listen to the other "Relaxing" CD's that are available.

    Not very relaxing3
This CD is ok and Obviously is not Grammy material. For the price it is ok but was looking for something "more relaxing." Sorry I cannot be more specific.

    Not that relaxing2
I was disappointed in this CD because I didn't find the music was as soothing as I would have expected from the title. Much of the music tended to be faster beats, loud, and somewhat "noisy". The CD is not bad, but it's just not as relaxing as other CD's I've listened to.

    Stunning5
I fell entirely under the spell of Tan Dun's "Tea." I get the very strong sense most fans of western opera will despise this piece as very few folk I know have warmed to this particular cup of "Tea." Those who found the musical language in Tan Dun's "First Emperor" arid or not "tuneful" enough may be further frustrated by the challenges of "Tea," which finds the composer writing in a far more Asian-influenced style, but those who give it a chance and let it work its own magic are, I believe, in for something very special.

Anyone intrigued by the "more than just playing" involvement Tan Dun requires from his orchestra may find even more intriguing the fact this work involves the orchestra (at least in the world premiere) to an even greater degree - to the point they are onstage. I found the orchestra's presence added greatly to my own enjoyment of the work and they were integrated into the staging so much so I can't imagine the work "traditionally" played out set up with a division between what occurs onstage and an unseen orchestra tanked in a pit. The battery of percussionists required on some inventive instruments - like paper (a mile high sheet!) a woman dipping her hands into a bowl of water, etc. bathe the hall and create a soundscape that is one of the most aurally sensuous where monks chants, sound, western music and silence all coalesce into something equal parts spiritual and sensual.

While there is most definitely a plot and story line, this is almost more an opera of ideas heavily influenced from the Book of Tea. The principal story is that of Seikyo, a former Japanese prince who became a monk following a rather intense series of events. He relates to his fellow monks the story of his journey through China in search of the Book of Tea, his fatal love for the Chinese Princess Lan, the challenges of her Emperor father, the jealousy and violence of her brother, the symbolism and meanings of the tea ceremony and the creation of tea. Tosca it ain't.

There is, if one allows themselves to fall under its spell, a spiritual, hypnotic quality here far different than the usual blood `n guts stories that enthrall and excite us in traditional western opera. Still, despite being deemed a critical success I fear an audience for Tea among traditionalists will always be rather limited.

I was thrilled one of my new "it" girls - Kelly Kaduce singing Princess Lan at the U.S. premiere in Santa Fe along with the original Prince Seikyo, Haijing Fu - who is absolutely amazing in this set.

For anyone interested in contemporary opera and an open mind (slightly redundant, but one never knows!) this is a must see. It is stunningly beautiful.

    The beautiful Opera!!!5
I am Chinese and I loved this opera much. It shows the beauty of Estern Asian Culture. Slow, Empty, silence, water, pater, store.
Tea and soul. Tea and Home.
Maybe it is hard for some audience to accept the Concept of Slow and Silence...but actually it is the culture thing... very moving melody...

PS, tea is also my favourtie. however, now i am in US and the type of tea i can drink is very limited.haha...

    Take a Risk!5
Very few musical experiences as novel and as ethereal as Tea are available on DVD. The staging is graceful; the sound palette of European, Chinese, and "natural" instruments is well integrated and beautifully appropriate; even Tan Dun himself, as conductor, is a visual asset. This is not easily described; you'll have to take a risk. (Caveat: if your taste requires drama and bravura, stick to Verdi.)
