    Excellent5
I bought this specifically for Slava as it is the audition piece chosen for this fall's band semester, but let's face it Bernstein's music is brilliant and a lot of fun to listen to. This collection has an excellent mix of his familiar and not so familiar works.

    Wonderful Bernstein5
For anyone who loves Bernstein (or even for those who don't), this is the CD to purchase. Includes excerpts from some of his most famous stage and serious works.

It has performances with some of worlds top names, original casts, and later revisions.

Performing Songwriter Magazine, Lee Zimmerman, December 2008
The premise seems bizarre at best. A renowned classical composer unfamiliar with Bob Dylan's music studies his lyrics and is subsequently inspired to re-imagine them as a classical concerto, recasting the works with new melodies wholly divorced from Dylan's original compositions. That's the bewildering back story behind John Corigliano's Mr. Tambourine Man, a song cycle that expropriates Dylan's discography - seven songs in all - to underscore a journey of emotion and awareness. Sung by acclaimed soprano Hila Plitmann with JoAnn Falletta conducting the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the music meanders from the idyllic sentiments of "Mr. Tambourine Man" to the call of "Blowin' in the Wind" and concludes with the uplifting optimism of "Forever Young".

    AllMusic.com, Stephen Eddins, October 2008
When Pulitzer-winning composer John Corigliano says he never listened to the songs of Bob Dylan, it's a shocking admission, particularly for a New York musician who was in his 20s in the '60s. One wonders what he would say if another artist admitted never having heard Aaron Copland. Regardless, without even hearing the tunes of Dylan's songs, Corigliano used some of the songwriter's lyrics -- mostly from the '60s protest period -- as poems for his own music. The result was an Americana song suite with political overtones called "Mr. Tambourine Man," first for soprano with piano and now for amplified soprano with orchestra. There are aspects of the cycle that feel almost comically arch, if one has any experience of Dylan's own gritty folk-rock. The bizarre musical-theater moments in the song "Mr. Tambourine Man" are cringe-worthy, as are the operatic outbursts in "Masters of War." But there are some surprisingly effective episodes in Corigliano's suite, thanks to his gift for long, arching melody and dramatic orchestrations. The Copland-esque treatment of "Clothes Line" is lovely, while the pastoral, ruminative setting of "Chimes of Freedom" has a grave, almost Shakespearean theatricality. Corigliano was lucky to find an ideal singer for the cycle: the Jerusalem-born Hila Plitmann, who pairs high technique with intimate phrasing. The disc also features "Three Hallucinations," a suite from Corigliano's score to the 1980 film "Altered States." If aptly nightmarish with the film, the music sounds slightly hokey on its own; still, the piece gets a high-impact performance.

    AllMusic.com, Stephen Eddins, November 2008
Mr. Tambourine Man, John Corigliano's 35-minute song cycle for amplified soprano and orchestra, had a unique genesis. Corigliano took texts from songs by Bob Dylan, and treated them purely as poetry, without using or referring to Dylan's music. He professes not to even know the Dylan originals, but frankly, it's a little hard to believe that anyone who didn't spend the 1960s in an isolation chamber could have avoided hearing "Blowin' in the Wind" somewhere along the line. Corigliano's experiment pays off because the texts are indeed terrific, and his thoughtful and evocative settings are persuasive interpretations of Dylan's lyrics. His music makes no reference to the folk tradition in which Dylan writes. These are clearly art songs with an entirely different set of aesthetic parameters, but particularly in the more reflective movements, Corigliano's settings have a haunting melancholy that evokes a sensibility of American populism not too far from Dylan's in its depth of feeling and emotional impact. He gives "Forever Young" a strophic setting that's wonderfully melodically memorable; its simplicity and transparency make it achingly poignant. There's a homespun Ivesian flavor to Corigliano's wistful and mysterious setting of "Clothes Line." "Blowin' in the Wind," perhaps the hardest sell because Dylan's original is so distinctive, succeeds because it brings a new twist to the text; it quietly begins with a sense of smoldering anger and grows in intensity as the cumulative power of the unanswerable questions builds, until it erupts in an outcry of full-blown rage before subsiding into resigned sadness. Hila Plitmann's remarkably pure and expressive voice and emotionally direct and unmannered performance make her the ideal interpreter for this material. This is certainly one of the strongest new vocal compositions and extraordinary performances to appear on CD in a while. The CD also includes Three Hallucinations, a suite the composer made from his score for the 1980 Ken Russell film Altered States. The eclectic, skittish music is in fact hallucinatory, full of eccentric juxtapositions, distorted and distended musical gestures, and appropriately random weirdness. Corigliano is a fabulous orchestrator, and his colorful score, although it's definitely "modern music," is approachable and audience-friendly, especially with the subject matter kept in mind. JoAnn Falletta leads the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in accomplished performances that span the technical and expressive spectrum, from the delicacy and finesse of the Dylan songs to the over-the-top wildness of Three Hallucinations. Naxos' sound is immaculate, with great clarity and balance, as well as a convincing sense of depth.

It should have been AMY !4
I've heard most of these pieces performed previously, live at the Cabrillo Festival in Santa Cruz, CA. There, Amy Burton, a soprano who regularly appears with the Metropolitan Opera, was the featured vocalist on Corigliano's TAMBOURINE MAN. I liked Amy's voice and interpretation much better than the woman on this recording. This woman seems much too percussive, overly dramatic, and quite pushy with her tone; almost as if she was singing a Torchy, Blues song down in New Orleans. Amy,on the other hand, is much more musical, tender, and seductive. I guess it boils down to ones likes or dislikes. In any event, I have no problem whatsoever with the instrumental portions of this recording. I really like the music of America's Dean of Composers, John Corigliano. I would recommend this CD to anyone who cares for Serious Contemporaneous Classical music, especially that of Mr. Corigliano. Gordon Wilson, Ariz.

    OMG1
If I had never heard of Bob Dylan, I would have merely found this song cycle cliched and overwrought. But to know the original songs and hear this is like watching a grotesque accident, brilliance transformed into bathos.

To borrow from Monty Python. "and now for something completely different"!3
If you haven't read the information before, the major part of this CD (and it's featured composition) is a series of seven of Bob Dylan's lyrics (here called "poems", though Dylan never meant them as such) set to a musical score by composer Corigliano, who - surprisingly - says he never heard sung before. (Yeesh, is there ANYONE in the world who has NEVER heard ANYONE sing "Blowin' in The Wind"?? Really??)

In addition to "BitW" there are other popular Dylan compositions ("Mr. Tambourine Man", "All Along The Watchtower") as well as less familiar ones ("Clothes Line", "Chimes of Freedom").

The concept is interesting, that's for sure. I did like the composer's musical settings, but had a hard time with the vocals sung by "Amplified Soprano", Hila Plitmann. In fact, I had to refer to the lyric booklet a few times to even guess which song she was singing. I'll admit I'm not a big fan of sopranos, and I listen mostly to folk, jazz and EARLY pop music, as well as film scores, but I wanted to give this album a chance. It lost my attention after one playing and I can't see playing this piece often.

The last third of the disc (15 minutes worth) was based on the composers score for the film "Alterted States" and I found this much more interesting, and will certainly return to those tracks again.

Certainly Naxos low retail price makes this a CD you can try and not break the bank. Amazon has "samples" of the tracks to hear so you can get the idea as to whether this is something you want to hear more of. And I'm certainly glad that Naxos recorded these pieces - as they have done with many "overlooked" classical compositions. It should be documents and I'm sure Dylan completists will want this in their collection.

St. Paul's Cathedral ImpressiveCollection of Anglican Hymns5
St. Paul's Cathdral is the second largest cathedral church in the basilican style, exceeded only by St. Peter's Rome. New York City's St. John the Divine is larger than St. Paul's, but with decidely gothic elements. All three cathedrals have fine choirs, but St. Paul's and St. John's continue the noble and unique sound of boys and men in the English tradition. St. Paul's great organ is one of the world's finest, with a decay of seven seconds. The great hymns are all here, conducted by John Scott, only recently appointed organist of St. Thomas' Church, Fifth Avenue, New York City. This is a recording will a be prized addition to your library of choral music. You will not be disappointed.

    One of the Best Ever5
This is one of my two all-time favorite choral recordings, the other being Conspirare's "Threshold of Night." The artistry of Craig Hella Johnson and Company of Voices (Conspirare) is incomparable. One cannot listen to Conspirare without being transported and transformed.

    Utterly breathtaking.5
I actually pulled off the highway and sat in a parking lot with tears coursing down my face as I listened, it was so beautiful. Absolutely stunning. Profoundly moving. Ineffable.

    Incredible Singing5
This is one of the best choral recordings you will ever own. Impassioned, beautiful singing with all the precision and discipline you expect in a choral recording. Buy it - you won't regret it!

    Outstanding Performance!5
Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) was an innovative composer who sought a happy balance between the modernist styles of Debussy and Ravel with Romantic, Rennaissance, and Greco-Roman styles. This album is a good example of his original style performed here to perfection by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

'The Birds' is a lyrical piece expressing images of various birds. The lightness of the piece makes one feel like their flying and the pieces try to create an image of the birds with instruments plucking to imitate the motions of a chicken for example. The Ancient 'Airs and Dances' is simply a transcription of Italian Rennaissance dances performed with modern and romantic styles. The 'Three Botticelli Pictures' is also a lyrical arrangement trying to represent the scenes depicted on the paintings. 'The Spring' of course tries to conjure an image of nymphs and zephyrs moving about in pastoral joy. The work 'The Adoration of the Magi' depicts the nativity scene and is a very measured piece. It is slow and melodic and the inclusion of Greco-Roman styles adds to the sense of mystery and distance somewhere in the East. The last piece, 'The Birth of Venus' depicts the godess Venus rising from her shell and coming to to the gentle shore. The vascillating strings give the impression of water rippling on the shore. The harp adds a sensation of divinity, grace, and beauty. All of these are wonderful pieces are very light and joyful to the ear.

The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra performs these works to absolute perfection and I can find nothing bad to say about either this performance or the recording. The sound quality is simply amazing in its clarity and volume. This is a great album for anyone's collection.

    Lovely performances of fine Respighi5
This is beautifully played and beautifully recorded. The conducterless Orpheus Chamber Orchestra gives finely detailed performances that capture the many moods of this music. Their performance of the Botticelli Triptych is the best that I have heard. The recording is excellent, with a very natural finely detailed sound. I recommend this recording, without reservation.

    Clear renditions of difficult-to-find Respighi5
There are an unfortunately small number of recordings of two of the works represented on this CD: Trittico Botticelliano and, to a lesser extent, Gli Uccelli. Many people prefer to focus on Respighi's larger and more grandiose works, specifically the three Rome suites, which is frankly a pity as Respighi's talent for precision and intricate weaving of voices is all but lost in the immense orchestras. Orpheus delivers these pieces clearly, in perfect synchronization, and without hesitation. Among the most difficult movements to keep together is the second of the Trittico, The Adoration of the Magi. The mixed meters and constantly changing tempi are executed as if they were terribly easy. Take it from a performer of these works, they aren't at all. The setting of the work is one solo wind from each section, one horn, one trumpet, small string sections, and the "coloration" of harp, celesta, piano and triangle. The intense tightness of this so-called color group is felt throughout without exception, even in the torrential seascape that concludes The Birth of Venus. No less stunning is the opening work of this collection, Gli Uccelli. Comprised of five movements taken from early Italian and French keyboard works by Rameau, Gallot and Pasquini, the work is delicate and intricate without being too complex. Orpheus captures this extremely well, and Peggy Pearson's oboe playing adds a light, comic touch to the middle movement "The Hen."The two suites (first and third) of Ancient Airs and Dances are equally well done, although not quite as exemplary in their rarity. The third suite, for strings alone, is particularly well-knit, and as usual, the ensemble is perfectly together.

    Poor recording quality2
I was very disappointed with the production of this cd. The sound quality was terrible. Maybe it the one I received was faulty and the sound quality is not typical of the product, but I ended up returning the cd.

    Very Relaxing5
A nice collection of Mozart arranged and performed as the title says - to relax.

It is not a definative collection as others have mentioned, but it the melodies are familiar and are things you know.

This leads to a good CD to put on, sit down and listen to with your eyes closed. One of the things I have been trying to do to help relax and calm down and I am very happy I bought this. I will be buying other titles in this series.

    Relax and enjoy wonderful Mozart!5
Many, Many great takes here and it is just a great collection of some of his work. Not for official fans perhaps trying to collect a lot of his music, but for the money this one is not a bad one to get. These are both elegant and relaxing and I feel I got a great deal for the price! There are more of these kind in terms of the relaxing style series so check them out!

    Amazon.com essential recording
Although the late Sviatoslav Richter spent his later years concentrating on Bach, Beethoven, and Haydn, he never completely abandoned the music of his native country. His reading of Rachmaninov's most popular concerto, captured in fine late-'50s stereo, is one of the most glorious ever recorded. Richter's amazing technique is completely up to the demands of Rachmaninov's difficult writing, and he plays the heart-on-sleeve melodies with such refined intensity that they never sound sentimental. This performance is a truly amazing example of great pianism, very strongly supported by the fine orchestra and its little-known conductor. Unfortunately, the accompanying Tchaikovsky is a dud. Karajan and Richter recorded this work together as a favor to a record-company executive, but they don't seem to be in sympathy. The conductor's excessive refinement holds the pianist back, and the result is much too restrained for the music. Never mind. The Rachmaninov alone is easily worth the price of this disc. --Leslie Gerber

    Almost the Best5
For the 2nd Piano Concerto this is the best. Richter crafts his individualistic interpretation that somehow finds further beauty in the score. The only reason for the review title is that if you are enraptured with this piece and love this interpretation to dire obsession, well, there is possibly one better recording. Surprise, it's by the same pianist, Richter, and in the same year, 1959. Do a search for "Rachmaninov" and "Richter." It's on the Yedang label, among others, and conducted by Kurt Sanderling.

Richter's interpretation is identical, not surprising given it's the same year. All you can do is play each version, one beside the other, and pick your favorite moments from each... a slight accent here, a clearer run there, it's a tossup. The other recording is less clear (live?) but has better bass response, which makes a difference. Sit back and marvel at the vast talent.

Richter's version of Rachmaninov's Second is the one all others are measured against and for good reason!5
The great Russian pianist took up the cause for Rachmaninov's at the time much-maligned works. I'm an enthusiast of modern music but I can't resist the warmth of the Romantics either. In our hearts, I think more people have a Romantic sensibilily than a Modernist one.

The second of Rachmaninov's concertos is one of his most famous works and one of the most lushy and slushy in the Romantic piano/orchestral repertoire. The concerto was prominently featured in the David Lean romance "Brief Encounter". Obviously they didn't use this Richter recording since it didn't exist yet.

From the grave opening to the stunning slow movement and the scintillating energy of the finale, this recording has Richter delivering the goods for the benefit of his Russian countryman's music. Listen especially to the last 2 and a half minutes of the slow movement, Richter plays with such raptness and feeling, it is heart melting and dreamy. Guaranteed to drown you in beautiful sound! I haven't heard anyone else play with such understanding. If you want a comparison recording, try Van Cliburn with Fritz Reiner. It's another great performance but not as good as Richter's. The conductor working with Richter is Stanislaw Wislocki and he leads the orchestra from Warsaw.

The coupling on this CD is Tchaikovsky's 1st, a concerto that is even more famous than the Rachmaninov. Unfortunately Richter and the great Austrian conductor Herbert von Karajan did not see eye to eye in matters of interpretation. Karajan, conducting the Vienna Symphony ( not the Philharmonic! ) goes for the long line, the lush texture, the grand backcloth. Richter goes for more energy, trying to break free of Karajan's pompous orchestral back up. I love Karajan as a conductor but he doesn't collaborate well with instrumental soloists usually. It's a strange performance that doesn't compete with the more famous accounts of this masterpiece. But that does not matter, if you want the best recording of Rachmaninov's 2nd concerto, this CD is it.

Another reviewer accused this recording to be in poor sound. I can't understand his opinion. The sound for 1959 ( the Rachmaninov 2nd ) is terrific and the Original Image Bit-Processing remastering job from DG has given it extra depth and bass, which is a major plus. I don't find any reservations here, this is great. A must purchase for Richter enthusiasts!

    Great performance, poor remastering3
Previous reviews extoll the virtues of Richter's performance, and indeed it is magnificent. Unfortunately, the remastering of this recording did not produce a quality result. The dynamics are poor, resulting in fuzzy strings, and horns and a less than vibrant sound from Richter's piano. There is no sense of "presence". This is a valuable recording for those with two or more copies of the Rach 2, who want this one as a historic performance or for collectors of Richter. If this is your first copy and you have a decent sound system, steer clear.
