    Top Notch5
This CD is for those who love romantic guitar music, Spanish masters and Spanish themed classics. Top Notch all the way.

    Classical Guitar4
It was a gift for my father who turned 88 on March 1st.
I sent it to him in Spain. He has been a guitar teacher all his life and still has students now in his ripe old age. He loved it, loved the music, loved the way they play.

These fiery renditions surpassed my expectations!5
Once again the L.A.G.Q. triumphs with their transcriptions of the very well known works included here. All of the music lends itself very well to the instrument, especially in the hands of this phenomenal quartet. This debut recording of the Ian Krouse selection is dramatic, dynamic and generally astounding. This is absolutely one of my favorite guitar recordings.

    First BD-Audio4
Tonal quality is first rate, especially through my Panasonic BD-50 blu ray player.
By comparison even better than the SACD disc through my Linn Unidisk player.
However, the surround mix (while very involving) places you in the middle of the orchestra, which I do not like.
From the booklet it seems this was deliberate- I wonder why then 2L don't use this mixing in their other SACD's?
Their normal 5.1 SACD's are also of prime quality (think BIS, Linn and HM quality) and make you feel in the second row which I prefer...

    A Little Clarification5
This is a 2 disc set from 2L Called "Divertimenti". The first disc is an
SACD Hybrid that features 69:00 mins. of works by Britten, Bacewicz, Bjorklund, and Bartok. All works for String Orchestra. The recordings are
done in DXD or Digital Extreme Definition. The SACD disc is the usual Three layers DSD Stereo, DSD Surround and regular CD Stereo. On the second disc which is a Blu-Ray Disc, the same works are featured available in Linear PCM 24bit/192khz,both Stereo and 5.1Surround, dts-hd MA 5.1 Surround,24bit/192 and Dolby TrueHD24bit/192, 5.1 Surround, and Dolby Digital 48khz,5.1 Surround and The perfomers are the Trondheim Soloists. The only Video on the second disc is the menu guide, this disc is being refered to as the first
release of a purely music only Blu-Ray disc. I suspect that the performances are all first rate, as all these works are a real showcase for any string orchestra.

Exciting, Quite Original, Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" From Janine Jansen5
Startling, exciting, and quite original, are the very words to describe Janine Jansen's unique, quite insightful, interpretation of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons". While there are many fine recordings of this work, with the best of the relatively recent crop include Mutter's and Chang's, Jansen's recording deserves ample praise simply for its bold, daring performance of Vivaldi's concerti cycle. Why? Hers is quite literally a stripped-down interpretation, consisting of herself, five other strings (two violins, viola, cello and double bass), theorbo and box organ/harpsichord. It is a tightly knit ensemble that includes American violinist Julian Rachlin, her brother Maarten (cello) and her father Jan (box organ/harpsichord). This allows for a "wonderfully transparent sound" that allowed "the musicians to be very flexible in colouring, dynamics and timing", as she notes in the CD liner notes. An ensemble that has yielded a very brisk, and very spirited, interpretation of these Vivaldi pieces. Needless to say, Decca's sound engineers have done a superlative job in this recording, which was made back in the Spring of 2004 in a Dutch concert hall. If there is only one false note that might be seized upon by detractors of Ms. Jansen's exceptional talents as a fine young classical musician, then it is the existence of appealing, quite alluring, photographs of her in rather revealing gowns on virtually every page of the CD liner notes; however, do not use these as a guide to determine whether or not you should acquire what is truly an exciting, rather invigorating, interpretation of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons".

    Way too Romantic1
I expected more from Ms. Jansen due to her reputation. But I should have known better after seeing the CD cover, with the artist carefully 'lounging' - posing in a way to display herself center stage, whilst dangling her Stradivarius like a bauble. The cover actually is a good summary of the music within: a tribute to the violinist, rather than the music.

I have heard other "passionate" renditions of the Seasons before, but I found this one unthoughtful and out-of-control in comparison. This is purely a romantic performance of a Baroque piece, and that's a shame, bc Janine is talented & smart enough to balance her interpretation with the score. I think that every violinist who records something as widely known as the Seasons has a difficult job standing out. That's why it's pretty amazing when you hear the performer's voice through the familiar structure, and the Seasons are reinvented. But this recording is indulgent. It's unique bc it is played without structure -- nothing newer or deeper than that.

In the first paragraph of this CD's booklet (which shows multiple other pose-y pictures of herself), Janine Jansen writes: "While trying to be faithful to each score, emotion and passion are very important to me in a performance. Technique has to be there, of course, but it should never be the main thing."

Her paragraph is a good summary of the performance. She's so talented, which is why I really missed the absence of balance, elegance, & nuance in her interpretation. It sounds like an earnest, clever artist deliberately trying to be different. I would actually admire that more if the expression went deeper than exaggerated emotions. In the end, I guess it's a matter of taste. Many people will find this a passionate rendition. I thought it was certainly emotional, but not genuine. The phrasing is strange, with emphasis on particular notes rather than the overall melody (esp noted in Spring). The tempos lurch from one extreme to the other. The dynamics are in your face, going from one extreme to the other within a space of phrases. Not everything is technically clean either -- Winter is a amateurish headlong rush & all the notes are meshed together. But my main critique is that Janine takes such artistic freedom with Vivaldi's music that Vivaldi's structure, that unseen but lovely extra performer, is purposefully cast out, deliberately not given a chance to tango.

However, this CD is a fun and entertaining listen! I listen to it occasionally for the pop music quality of the playing which is fun! - like Richard Clayderman does the Bach Goldberg Variations. My husband, who doesn't really listen to classical, actually told me that he felt uneasy when I had the CD running, so in a way, Janine Jansen has pushed the envelope (a positive or negative again depending on point of view).

I have to commend the other players on this CD. My favorite part was the purity of their instrumental voices, which was generally clear due to the small group setting, especially in the Spring runs. The recording quality is excellent.

Unique and Timeless Rendition of a Classic Set of Concertos5
This is a unique, clear and memorable rendition of the well-known "Four Seasons" Concertos as composed by Antonio Vivaldi. The light, clear and harmonious presentation of these famous Concertos make this particular recording stand out. There is a timeless and enduring feel to this recording.

I have listened to many recordings of these Concertos and, in my opinion, this recording stands out distinctly from all others in a positive manner.

I recommend this for everyone who enjoys the "Four Seasons".

    Simply The Best Mahler 85
Solti and the Chicago Symphony made dozens of excellent recordings, but this is the best of the best--the definitive performance of Mahler's 8th Symphony. But you don't have to believe me; listen to the musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic. In 1971, Vienna and Chicago traded cities for a short time. Chicago recorded Mahler's 8th just before leaving Viennna, when the Vienna musicians had already returned. Many of them were sitting in the hall, listening to the recording session, completely stunned at what they were hearing. This is a performance for all time and a privilege to experience. Enjoy.

The Recording of the Twentieth Century5
This engineering work by the Decca people and the stroke of Solti's genius with the Chicago Symphony catapults this to the rank of THE RECORDING OF THE CENTURY. What acoustics! What spirit! What tour de force! Even after three and a half decades, no recording has surpassed this. The Magnificent Symphony of a Thousand receives a performance that even Mahler would envy. Solti has left behind Bernstein's effort with the London and Vienna ensembles way behind. If you haven't heard this, you haven't reached the summit of symphonic recorded music!
    Mahler: Symphony No. 8

The most famous recording of the Mahler 8th5
That is due to the fact that when it was recorded, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Solti were at the top of the Orchestra ladder. The brass section was considered the best in the symphonic world. And this work has monumental brass parts that require superhuman effort to play. This recording was made in Vienna. There's an article written that says many members of the Vienna Philharmonic's brass section were present during the recording and allowed to watch. And after the mighty and heroic conclussion of the work walked out of the recording site mumbling to themselves. The brass playing is that wonderful (I'm a orchestral percussionist by education and performance). The other parts of the orchestra really shine too. The choirs (how can you go wrong with the Vienna Opera Choir?) are exemplary too. And the soloists are at their top form (sadly, many aren't around anymore).

My biggest beef is with Solti's tempi. I have always felt that he moved at a quicker clip than other conductors. In the first movement, Veni Creator Spiritus, this works well because it is a very dramatic and kinetic movement. However, at the very end, with brass choirs supplementing the orchestra and blazing, his tempo moves just a bit too fast. It's a small complaint, but Solti is sometimes accused of this. Also, I feel his conducting is sometimes clinical, say the opposite of Bernstein. On occassion, it happens here. I have the LP still and used it to compare to this recording. The brass parts on the LP shine and are played in correct intonation. But the CD has some really weird parts on the brass. There are times that the brass is so in the background that you cannot distinguish it from the winds. Other times, it comes out blazing in an unnatural crescendo relative to the score. I think the engineers who remastered this version had some difficulties. In all fairness though, this piece is very difficult to record simply because there are so many instruments and singers. Things like where to place the brass choir to give the feeling of a Celestial Host, inserting the piano and organ in proper balance to the rest is very difficult for a balance engineer.

If performance is your criteria though, you can't get much better than this. It's exciting and breathtaking.
